Guide

Current active mass torts.

The mass tort pipeline turns over constantly. This guide points to the authoritative public sources for what is currently active and how to check whether you qualify.

Where to look — authoritative sources

  • JPML pending-MDL summary. Updated monthly; lists every pending federal MDL with case name, number, transferee court, and pending action count.
  • PACER. Federal court docket access; for each MDL, the master docket and steering committee orders show scope, deadlines, and bellwether progress.
  • FDA MedWatch. Adverse event reports for drugs and devices. Pattern of reports often precedes MDL formation.
  • NHTSA recalls and investigations. Vehicle defect investigations and recalls; many MDLs follow.
  • CPSC SaferProducts.gov. Consumer product complaints and recalls.
  • State court mass tort dockets. California (JCCP), New Jersey (MCL), and Pennsylvania (mass tort program) maintain coordinated proceedings outside the federal MDL system.

Common categories in pipeline

Categories that have produced sustained mass tort activity over the past decade. Status of any specific case may change; verify current activity:

  • Pharmaceuticals. Drugs with belated label changes (warnings added years after FDA approval) commonly produce MDLs. SSRIs, GLP-1 receptor agonists, hormonal contraceptives, and oncology drugs are recurring categories.
  • Medical devices. Hip and knee implants, surgical mesh, IVC filters, hernia mesh, and CPAP machines have produced large MDLs.
  • Environmental exposure. PFAS contamination, AFFF firefighting foam, paraquat, and Roundup glyphosate are active categories.
  • Consumer products. Talcum powder, hair-relaxer products, and certain consumer electronics have produced MDLs over health-effects allegations.
  • Vehicle defects. Airbag inflators, transmissions, and battery defects produce both NHTSA recalls and follow-on MDLs.

How to verify your potential case

  1. Identify the product by manufacturer, brand, and (for drugs and devices) lot or model number if available.
  2. Search JPML pending-MDL summary by product or manufacturer name.
  3. Search FDA MedWatch, NHTSA, or CPSC for safety actions on the product.
  4. Check whether your injury is on the recognized injury list for the relevant MDL. Most MDLs have specific qualifying diagnoses.
  5. Check the statute of limitations in the state where you were injured. The MDL deadline does not override the state limitations period.

What this guide is not

A list of specific cases with payout estimates. Such lists go stale within months as MDLs settle, close, or change scope, and many sites publishing them are lead-generation pages with inflated numbers. Use the authoritative sources above and verify current activity before relying on any case-specific information.
